He may not be a name everyone around the NFL knows, but Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins made an impression on teammates on both sides of the ball as soon as he was drafted last season.
Pro Bowl cornerback Kamari Lassiter was one person who knew Higgins would be a difference-maker for the Texans.
“I knew ‘Higg’ was good last year,” Lassiter said. “When he first stepped foot in this door, he was NFL ready. You take the offseason to just work on whatever you feel like you need to work on. Obviously, he’s worked on a lot of things. He’s bigger, he’s faster, he’s stronger. He’s running routes the way he wants to. He’s running with precision. He’s running with power. He’s playing with confidence. I feel like it might not be that he’s gotten better. It just might be he’s more comfortable in the system. He’s more confident. I just feel like he’s playing with that confidence.”
Despite playing in just 58 percent of the offensive snaps in 2025, Higgins tied Pro Bowl wideout Nico Collins with a team-leading six touchdowns. He was also third among Texans players in receiving yards last season with 525 yards.
So far in training camp, Lassiter has seen Higgins’ confidence grow as he continues to get better.
“It’s just like all of us, he just continues to get better,” Lassiter said. “Every day you can tell that he’s adding something to his bag, whether it’s route running or whether it’s precision. He’s playing with confidence. He’s out there catching every ball that comes his way. He’s a really good player; he’s always been a really good player. He’s only going to continue to go up and up.”
While veteran Tank Dell will be back in the receiving core after missing the past 18 months, it’s clear the Texans plan on having Higgins at No. 2 or even No. 3 receiver spot on the depth chart.
Given his performance last season and his progress in training camp so far, he will most likely take on an increased role in the offense this year.
The Texans return to practice Tuesday.
