An El Paso police officer was allegedly assaulted by two teenage girls after they stole from a store at Cielo Vista Mall, authorities said.
Officers arrested Madelyn De La Rosa, 17, and a 15-year-old girl, whose name was not released, in connection with the theft and assault case on Thursday, March 12, at Cielo Vista Mall, El Paso Police Department spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo said in a news release.
No attorney is named in court records for De La Rosa.
An officer at the mall was alerted by a mall employee of two girls who stole from a store, the news release states.
The two girls allegedly assaulted the officer during a struggle as the officer attempted to detain them, the news release states. Additional officers responded to the scene and arrested the girls.
The officer, who has been with El Paso police for seven years, suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, the news release states. No information was released on the severity of the injuries.
The 15-year-old girl was arrested in connection with one count each of theft of property, evading arrest or detention, interference with public duties, and assault of a public servant. No further information has been released about the girl since she is a minor.
De La Rosa was arrested on suspicion of robbery. She was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Friday, March 13, on a $3,000 bond. She remains jailed as of Friday afternoon, jail logs show. No information was released on why De La Rosa is not being charged with assault.
