Investigating a deadly Lubbock County shooting
His charge stems from a Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit Investigation that began after Lubbock County Sheriff’s Deputies responded about 2:38 p.m. Monday to a call reporting a dead body at a residence in the 6100 block of East County Road 7260.
The caller, who was identified as Harston, told dispatchers he shot a man who chased him on his property, according to an arrest warrant.
Responding deputies found a man, later identified as Garza, outside of the home suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators found evidence that he was dragged along the ground after he was shot, the warrant states.
He was taken to University Medical Center where he died about an hour later.
Investigators found Garza’s silver pickup truck that appeared to have a bullet hole.
Meanwhile, Harston was also taken by ambulance to UMC.
Harston’s brother, who was inside the house sleeping before the shooting, reportedly told investigators he was awoken by an argument between his brother and Garza. Moments later, gunshots rang out and his brother entered their home saying there was a dead body on their property.
Harston reportedly told investigators at the hospital that he exited his home with a firearm in his front right pocket and began walking to the road when an unknown man yelled out to him asking to speak with him, the warrant states.
Harston reportedly investigators the stranger used a derogatory word as he turned to him then chased him around his property twice.
Harston said the man was unarmed and didn’t threaten him with violence.
However, Harston reportedly told investigators he stopped running and shot the man multiple times without saying a word, the warrant states.
Harston reportedly said he broke Garza’s phone out of frustration and dragged him into his property because he was lying on the fence line.
He remains held at the Lubbock County Detention Center. His bond is set at $250,000.
