Longhorns basketball lands former St. Mary's G Mikey Lewis from portal

While the start of the 2025-2026 college basketball season is still months away, the Texas Longhorns have been busy reshaping their roster through transfer portal. That continued on Thursday, when they secured a commitment from former Saint Mary’s guard Mikey Lewis.

In Lewis, the Longhorns are getting a player coming off a career year. In 33 games during the 2025-2026 campaign, the California native averaged 13.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He also shot 36.8 % from three-point range. While he still has some room to grow, Lewis continued to improve his game while getting a steep increase in playing time.

Although head coach Sean Miller will continue looking for ways to improve his roster, the future looks bright for Longhorns basketball. Their additions in the portal include Amari Evans, David Punch, Isaiah Johnson, and Elijah Freeman. Adding Lewis to the mix gives Texas another proven scorer to rely on.

Due to his play, Lewis has made national headlines. This past season, he earned All-West Coast Conference Honors while setting a career high in games started. He was extremely efficient with the ball in his hands, which is partly why Texas made him a top target for teams looking for more offense.

As Lewis adjusts to a new system, he will get to play alongside one of the best recruiting classes in the country. In just a few months, Texas will welcome highly regarded prospects such as Bo Ogden and Joe Sterling to campus. That group will be tasked with bringing a national title to Austin.

With plenty of time to make more additions, the Longhorns should be a team to watch. However, with Lewis now officially in the mix, the roster is poised for a deep playoff run.
