The Sundown softball team showed its championship mettle Saturday.
The Roughettes won back-to-back games over Muenster to overcome a series deficit and advance to the state title game for the second-straight year. Sundown will look to repeat as Class 2A Division II champion in a rematch against Shiner on Thursday at McCombs Field in Austin.
The Roughettes topped the Comanches 9-3 last season to win their first state championship.
Sundown’s semifinal victory over Muenster was a repeat of 2025, albeit in a longer series. The Roughettes bounced back from a 6-5 loss in the opener Thursday to take both games Saturday at Poly Wells Field.
Sundown (30-4) forced a winner-take-all contest with a 12-7 victory, then followed with a 6-1 clincher.
The Roughettes mashed 15 hits in Game 2, led by Breigh Gregory’s 4-for-4 outing. That included a home run and triple as Gregory tallied five RBIs. She also earned the win in a complete game. Gregory allowed two earned runs and two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Sundown overcame nine errors in the contest.
Destiny Garza pitched Game 3 and found personal redemption. After taking the loss Thursday, she allowed one earned run and three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Brynly Gregory provided early fireworks with a two-run homer in the first inning, and the Roughettes never trailed.
The Hornets cut their deficit to 2-1 through two innings, but Sundown answered with three runs in its next at-bat.
The Roughettes are scheduled to face Shiner at 1 p.m. Thursday.
