Sprouts Farmers Market will open its new Corpus Christi store Jan. 9

Sprouts Farmers Market at 1440 Airline Road will close its doors Jan. 7, 2026, when the grocery store relocates to a shopping center at 4717 S. Padre Island Drive.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled at 6:45 a.m. Jan. 9, with plans to open the new store at 7 a.m., according to a company news release.

The new store will open in Island Gate Plaza near Everhart Road, about a 3.5-mile trip from the current store, which opened in the Gulfway Shopping Center in the late 1950s.

A variety of activities are scheduled for the grand opening weekend:

The Phoenix-based grocer sells natural and organic food, produce, meat and seafood, vegetarian and vegan offerings, bulk foods and wellness products. The stores also offer lunch options, with specials including $5 Sushi Wednesdays and sandwiches, ready-to-eat meals and heat-and-eat prepared foods.

Company representatives tout the store’s relocation as an opportunity to expand products and services.

The new store will be open daily from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.

What do Corpus Christi residents think of Sprouts’ relocation?

Sprouts’ relocation will be significant for people who bought items at the popular store on Airline Road for decades.

“I shop here maybe three to five times a week,” said Carlos Tamez-Mendez, a Corpus Christi resident who lives near the current Sprouts on Airline Road with his wife and two kids. “It was nice having this here.”

He said that he would shop at the store for protein and veggies and found most of what he needed there within minutes from his home.

“I feel like (the relocation) is going to be a little inconvenient, although it will be better for people who live across town,” he said. “What I really liked about the store was the employees. Hopefully it will stay some of the same staff.”

Garcia said she lives about 15 minutes from the area on Ayers Street and Gollihar Road and normally shops at H-E-B or eats at the other restaurants located in or near the Island Gate Plaza during her lunch break.

“This will be convenient and different,” she said.

A longtime Corpus Christi resident who works in another store at Island Gate Plaza, Lorena Garcia, said the new Sprouts will offer options that were not available at the current location.

“They’re having a sushi bar and deli market, which is something different that we’re excited about,” she said.

Another shopper who said he’d been coming to the soon-to-relocate store for 30 years said he thinks the move will be a good thing.

“They’re moving because they’re growing,” Rex Manning said. “The new location will be good for Center City folks.”
