The San Angelo Standard-Times will be previewing local high school football teams throughout August ahead of the 2025 season.
Sonora Broncos
District: 3-2A DI
2024 record: 5-6, 2-3
Head coach: Blake Weston
Most recent district championship: 2023
State titles: 1966, 1968, 1970, 1971, 2000
What to know
The Broncos lost a lot of offensive talent to graduation, returning less than half their starters from last season. However, Weston said having quarterback Aaron Segura entrenched as the starter early in camp has the offense “light years” ahead of where it was at this point last season.
Despite not playing a full season, Segura finished with 2,767 yards and 24 touchdowns passing as a sophomore last year and helped the team reach back-to-back 7-on-7 state tournaments.
Weston said many of the new names on offense played on the defensive side of the ball last season. Evan Arredondo, David Luna, Acea Gomez and David Guerra all saw significant playing time on varsity last season and will have major roles on offense.
Sonora has been a powerhouse in Region I high school football dating back to the 1960s and ’70s when they won four of their five state championships. There were ups and downs with postseason success since then, but for the past two decades, the Broncos have been in the playoff picture, usually making deep runs. Despite a host of new faces, it would not be surprising to see the Broncos make another run this season.
Coach Blake Weston on the 2025 season
“We’re way further along,” Weston said. “We’re doing stuff right now, offensively, we haven’t done in a couple of years. And I think it’s just kudos to the kids coming in during the summer, working and getting stuff done.
“We’ll be way different. Fall camps have gone great. You know, we lost some pieces last year, but every year is going to be kind of new for everybody. You worry about going into fall camp who your leaders are going to be. Who is going to step up? Are you going to find leaders at all? And we answered those questions pretty early on in our fall camp. We’ve got some kids stepping up and being leaders.”
