Hereford girls basketball player Mia Gomez was voted the Happy State Bank Girls High School Athlete of the Week for Jan. 12-18.
Gomez scored 28 points, connecting on seven 3-pointers, in a win against Perryton. Gomez added three rebounds and three steals against the Lady Rangers. Gomez also tallied 22 points, four steals and two assists to help Hereford pull off its first win against Randall in 10 years.
The sophomore received 5,654 of the 10,039 votes cast for Athlete of the Week, which was 56.3% of total votes.
Meanwhile, Caprock boys soccer player Alan Carrasco has been voted the Happy State Bank Boys High School Athlete of the Week for Jan. 12-18. Carrasco scored a pair of goals in the Longhorns’ 5-0 win against Lubbock High.
The sophomore received 3,047 of the 10,039 votes cast for Athlete of the Week, which was 30.4% of total votes.
Students in all varsity sports are eligible and can only be named Athlete of the Week one time per season, per sport, and athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.
Nominations are due by 5 p.m. each Saturday and can be submitted through email at sports@amarillo.com.
