The Education Service Center Region 2, which serves the Coastal Bend, gave Hernandez the honor.

He will now compete for state Superintendent of the Year. State finalists will be announced in the fall.

Hernandez was named Superintendent of the Year by the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association in 2024, and he was a state finalist for the Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year award in 2020.

“This recognition is a testament to Dr. Hernandez’s exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the students, staff and families of CCISD,” Corpus Christi ISD board President Dolly Gonzales Trolley said in a news release. “We are proud to see his work recognized at the regional level and wish him the very best as he advances in the Texas Superintendent of the Year competition.”

Last year’s Region 2 Superintendent of the Year was Eddie Hesseltine of the Orange Grove Independent School District.
