Return of Raiderville at Texas Tech? Students camp out ahead of Red Raider football game

Older Red Raider fans might be getting deja vu as Texas Tech students bring back a tradition to the university’s football program.

Years ago, students used to camp out ahead of big Red Raider football games, creating what became a makeshift village on campus, affectionately known as Raiderville. This was especially true during the storied football season in 2008, when the Red Raiders toppled the No. 1 UT Longhorns in Lubbock and gave fans dreams of greater things.

The tradition waned a new traditions arose, although it has occasionally popped up for major basketball games on campus.

However, it’s back as students want to ensure they have a seat at what might be the hottest event in Lubbock this year.

On Saturday, the No. 9 Red Raiders are set to take on the No. 8 BYU Cougars at Jones AT&T Stadium, setting the stage for who might be in and out of the Big 12 championship game and perhaps the College Football Playoffs.

Along with that, ESPN’s hit program, College GameDay, is also set to be on campus for the game, marking the first time in almost two decades since their last visit.

With much on the line and the return of an old tradition, Texas Tech students want to ensure they have front-row seats to what might be a historic season for the Red Raiders and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
