Saturday night’s pro boxing show at Southwest University Park was a mixed result for fans and boxers.
A strong weather system brought consistent rain throughout the night and after three delays, three of the seven fights were officially canceled at about 9 p.m. The “Bouts at the Ballpark” fight card started at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the baseball stadium in Downtown El Paso.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation made the call to cancel the remaining fights as the storm system continued late into Saturday.
Who didn’t get to fight
El Paso unbeaten super middleweight Jorge Tovar, El Paso super bantamweight Ariel “Apache” Moreno and unbeaten featherweight Victor “Jalapeño” Hernandez didn’t get to fight.
Hernandez was scheduled to fight a 10-rounder vs. Conrado Martinez in the main event, Tovar was scheduled to fight Louis Turner in a six round fight and Moreno was scheduled to fight Joshua Montoya in a six round fight.
El Paso’s Ivy Enriquez stays unbeaten
Ivy Enriquez, who just graduated from Bel Air High School this past summer, stopped Sarah Click at 1:21 of the second round in the scheduled four rounder.
Enriquez, who made her debut in February, remained perfect at 5-0.
Enriquez was pinpoint with her punches and was the aggressor from the start of the scheduled four round fight. She landed a variety of punches with both hands throughout the fight.
“It’s been a learning experience for the start of my career,” Enriquez said. “I had a good game plan and I was ready for the fight.”
Enriquez hopes to fight Nov. 8 at the Inn Of The Mountain Resort and Casino in New Mexico.
El Paso’s Nayeli Rodriguez wins unanimous decision
Nayeli Rodriguez, who fights at flyweight, was in control throughout in winning a unanimous decision against Kedra Bradley. The fight was scheduled for six rounds, but was made official after five rounds due to the rain.
Rodriguez had the superior boxing skills throughout the fight, landing consistently both to the body and head. The win improved her record to 6-0-1.
El Paso’s Dominic Barry stays perfect
Dominic Barry, who fights at cruiserweight, is now 9-0-1 with nine knockouts after his opponent Elijah Sweat didn’t answer the bell for the second round.
Sweat came out aggressive to start the fight, but Barry was calm and eventually floored Sweat twice in the first round.
Sweat survived the round but his corner saw enough and waved off the fight.
“I just stayed patient and found the openings in his defense,” Barry said. “I felt strong. I had a good training camp.”
A draw in the first fight of the night
Super middleweights Pedro Lujan and Yhorhighness Rezzaq fought to a four round draw in the opening fight of the night.
