Police identify man killed in fiery crash

A man died after crashing Sunday during the Texas Airstrip Attack Abilene at the Abilene Regional Airport, police said in a media release.

Gregory Vernon Ibsen, 74, of Colorado did not survive the crash and died at the scene, Abilene police said.

Ibsen was participating in the event in a modified 2006 Chevy Corvette when the vehicle experience a tripped event, causing it to roll multiple times and catch fire, police said.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, police said.

Airstrip Attack events began in 2011 as a way for street racers to compete safely and legally, according to the website.
