The ambitious Paso Del Norte Trail is receiving a new round of funding.
The Paso Del Norte Health Foundation, the group behind the 70-mile, countywide trail network, announced Monday, Dec. 1, that the Texas Transportation Commission approved $31 million for two major segments of the project.
“This funding moves us one step closer to completing a vibrant network of trails that connects people to parks, neighborhoods, and places they love,” said city Capital Improvement Department Director of Grant Funded Programs Joaquín Rodriguez in a news release. “We are grateful for the Texas Transportation Commission’s support and proud to help expand safe, accessible mobility options for all El Pasoans.”
The following is a breakdown of how the latest round of funding will be allocated:
With Monday’s announcement, a total of $88 million has been secured for the project. Currently, 21 miles have been completed, including the Rio Grande River Park Trail and the Playa Drain Trail, and another 31 miles have been funded for design or construction.
The vision for the Paso Del Norte Trail began in the early 2000s and gained new life in 2017 when the Paso Del Norte Health Foundation began investing in design and construction. By 2018, more than $55 million had been secured for the project and within three years significant portions of the trail were already under construction.
“The Mission Valley communities stand to gain safer routes for walking and cycling, strengthened cultural corridors, and new opportunities for recreation,” said El Paso County Commissioner Iliana Holguin. “This project reflects our commitment to enhancing quality of life and supporting healthy, connected communities throughout the county.”
