A new Horizon City Police Headquarters, renovations to El Paso fire stations, and a vibrant new lighting and decorations coming to Pueblo Viejo Park in the Lower Valley are among the latest in local municipal projects.
Here’s a roundup of some of the latest city projects in El Paso and surrounding communities:

The city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, May 19, to celebrate the completion of a major $3.7 million renovation of El Paso Fire Station No. 22 at 6500 N. Mesa St. in the Coronado area.

The official opening of the new Horizon City Police Headquarters and Municipal Courts Building took place on Friday, May 15, at 15021 Darrington Rd. near Horizon Boulevard.
The $10 million project was built across the street from the old police building in the fast-growing suburb east of El Paso.
Horizon City Mayor Andy Renteria and Police Chief Marco A. Vargas took part in the grand opening. Dignitaries in attendance included El Paso District Attorney James Montoya, Socorro Mayor Rudy Cruz Jr. and Socorro Police Chief Robert C. Rojas.
Pueblo Viejo Park to get Sun City Lights glow-up
Pueblo Viejo Park is getting a glow-up with new decorative light features, a pavilion, sidewalks and other improvements as part of the Sun City Lights program to revitalize, beautify and transform public spaces, the city of El Paso said in a news release.
El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson, Eastridge-Mid Valley city Rep. Lily Limon and dancers from the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo took part in a project groundbreaking ceremony on May 14 at the park at 233 N. Zaragoza Rd. in the Ysleta neighborhood.
The $1.29 million project is funded through 2019 capital improvement plan. Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of this year, city officials said.
The Sun City Lights program seeks to enhance neighborhoods with illuminated, engaging improvements to enhance the quality of life, the city of El Paso stated.
New EPFD Fire Station No. 38 is Upper East Side ‘milestone’
The El Paso Fire Department’s Fire Station No. 38 will “strengthen emergency response” in the fast-expanding Upper East Side, a city news release stated.
Fire Station No. 38 had its grand opening on May 5 at 14301-B Pebble Hills Blvd., next to the El Paso Police Department Upper East Side Regional Command Center, which opened in 2024.
“Fire Station 38’s opening marks a significant milestone in our commitment to serve and protect our community,” El Paso Fire Chief Jonathan Killings said in a statement. “This state-of-the-art facility will enhance our response capabilities in far East El Paso and improve the overall safety for our community.”
The more than 9,000-square-foot facility was funded by the voter-approved 2019 Public Safety Bond. The station had an estimated cost of $5.4 million for design and construction, a city news release stated. An additional $1.2 million from the Public Safety Bond was allocated for emergency vehicles for the new station.
Fire Station No. 38 includes three vehicle bays, a dispatch office, a dormitory, decontamination and shower facilities, a fitness area, medical and equipment storage and other amenities.
Fire Station No. 20 renovated in Cielo Vista area
The $1.45 million renovation of El Paso Fire Station No. 20, funded by the 2019 Public Safety Bond, was recently completed.
Fire Station No. 20 is at 8301 Edgemere Ave., near Burges High School in the Cielo Vista neighborhood. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 30 celebrated the completion of the renovation.
Interior and exterior improvements were made to the fire station, including new floors, ceiling, windows and doors, upgrades to the heating-and-cooling, electrical and plumbing systems and a new kitchen, restrooms, showers and decontamination room, a city news release stated.
The renovations are intended to “provide firefighters with safer, more functional facilities that support emergency response and day-to-day operations,” the city stated.
