One person died and another person was injured in a crash in Parmer County early Friday, March 13 and alcohol is considered a factor, authorities said.

DPS said the driver of the Honda went into the northbound lane and struck the Nissan nearly head-on.

The Nissan’s driver, Jose Cal Cucul, 45, of Muleshoe, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been wearing a seatbelt.

The Honda’s driver, Saul Rodriguez-Cruz, 24, of Friona, was taken to Muleshoe Area Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

DPS said Rodriguez-Cruz was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, which is ongoing.

The weather conditions were dry and clear with a 75 mph speed limit in the area.
