Rough season continues for Texas Tech after weekend sweep vs the Pokes

It was a pleasant start to the week for Texas Tech baseball after the Red Raiders took care of Tarleton State and ACU by a combined 22-4 score on back-to-back days. However, those smiles were quickly erased when the Oklahoma State Cowboys visited the Rip over the weekend.

The poor showing began on Friday, when Tech fell to the Pokes 16-6 in seven innings to start the three-game skid. Saturday was a better showing by the Red and Black, but they ultimately suffered the same result regardless of the score. Tech held a 2-0 lead going into the third inning and a 6-3 edge after six innings. Oklahoma State would flip the script, outscoring the Red Raider 6-2 over the final three innings to win 9-8.

Jackson Burns gave them 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs while striking out six. Logan Addison and Logan Bevis gave up six earned runs over the next four innings to blow the lead built up by the offense. The scoring would disappear during Sunday’s series finale.

On Sunday, the Pokes got off to a 3-0 start after the first 3.5 innings until Logan Hughes blasted a two-run homer to centerfield to get Tech on the board and close the gap to 3-2. The Red Raiders wouldn’t get any closer than that as Oklahoma State pulled away with a five-run ninth inning to extend the lead from 6-2 to 11-2. OSU’s Brennan Phillips pitched 8.1 innings and completely stifled the Tech offense, while Tim Tadlock used six pitchers to get through nine innings.

After the weekend sweep, Tech fell to 22-22 and 6-15 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders will head to Frisco, Texas, on Tuesday to play the Oklahoma Sooners. It will be a rematch from the season opener at Globe Life Field in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown. The Sooners are ranked No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll coming into the week.

Oklahoma is 29-14 and 11-10 in the SEC. The Sooners finished the weekend taking two of three from the Auburn Tigers. First pitch for Tech vs Oklahoma in Frisco is set for 6:30 p.m. CT
