Moody High School has partnered with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to offer a dual credit geospatial engineering and land surveying program.
Corpus Christi Independent School District and university representatives met on April 30 to sign a memorandum of understanding.
Moody High School is the third Texas high school, but the first Corpus Christi school, to participate in the dual credit geospatial engineering and land surveying pathway at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
A.C. Jones High School in Beeville was the first Coastal Bend high school. Also participating in the Islander Academy is Klein Independent School District near Houston.
The program prepares students for careers in land surveying and geospatial engineering.
The university’s Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science has been working to attract young people into the geospatial and surveying field. Other initiatives include a land survey summer camp.
In 2023, the average age for a registered professional land surveyor in Texas was 60.
According to a news release from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, the geospatial science undergraduate program is the only Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology-accredited program of its kind in Texas. The release states that university graduates in the program have a 100% in-field job placement rate.
The partnership provides a new pathway for Moody High School students to earn college credit and exposure to the field, also adding to the campus’ career and technical education opportunities. Current programs at Moody High School include engineering, nursing science and welding.
The university partners with Flour Bluff, Gregory-Portland, Rockport-Fulton and Tuloso-Midway school districts, as well as Incarnate Word Academy, on other dual credit Islander Academy programs.
