Meet the 2025 small-school football Super Team for Lubbock, South Plains

Here is the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s 2025 small-school football Super Team, which is comprised of South Plains players in Class 2A, 3A or TAPPS.

Selections are based on nominations made by coaches.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Josue Sigala, Sr., utility, Muleshoe

Sigala spent time at quarterback and running back, amassing 2,235 rushing yards and 38 total touchdowns. That included 403 passing yards and six TDs and 11 receptions for 80 yards and a TD. He was a first-team all-district QB.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Ben Castillo, Sr., LB, Littlefield

In 8½ games, Castillo recorded 133 tackles (67 solo), including 19 for a loss, three quarterback pressures, one fumble recovery and two pass breakups to earn District 2-3A Division II co-defensive MVP.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Blayce Jeter, Jr., LB, Shallowater

Jeter posted 120 tackles, including 12 for a loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was co-newcomer of the year for District 1-3A D-I.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Chris Softley, Lubbock Christian

Softley went out with a bang, leading the Eagles to the TAPPS Division III state championship. LCHS finished 12-1, with its lone loss to Wellington. The Eagles knocked off Dallas Christian 36-30 in the title game. Softley left after nine seasons and more than 100 wins to become the head coach at Division II UT Permian Basin.

FIRST TEAM

Daniel Ramos, So., QB, Lamesa

Ramos was 229 of 372 passing (61.6%) for 3,454 yards, 41 TDs and 10 interceptions. He was the District 2-3A D-I offensive MVP.

Dai Dai Atkins, Sr., RB, Lubbock Christian

Atkins ran 162 times for 1,540 yards and 17 TDs.

Randon Curtis, Jr., RB, Post

Curtis ran for 1,436 yards and 17 TDs on 198 carries.

Cooper Hammock-Wilson, Sr., WR, Idalou

Hammock-Wilson made 67 catches for 1,125 yards and 12 TDs.

Keaton Lee, Sr., WR, Lubbock Christian

Lee, a UT Permian Basin signee, recorded 81 catches for 1,579 yards and 20 TDs.

E.J. Rivas, Sr., WR, Morton

Rivas set a school record with 1,213 yards on 61 catches with 13 TDs. He also ran for 93 yards and a TD and threw for 172 yards and three TDs.

Daniel Payne, Sr., TE, Slaton

Payne, a first-team all-district selection, caught 23 passes for 374 yards and eight TDs through nine games. Final stats were not provided.

Westen Cannon, Sr., OL, Sudan

Cannon was the district offensive lineman of the year, grading 94% with 21 pancakes and zero sacks allowed.

Mason Rodriguez, Sr., OL, New Deal

Rodriguez earned district offensive lineman of the year after grading better than 90% in all 11 games.

Major Tucker, Sr., OL, Lubbock Christian

Tucker, a UT Permian Basin signee, graded 91% with 88 pancakes and one sack allowed.

Broxton Varnell, Sr., OL, Ropes

Varnell was a first-team all-district selection after grading 94% with 43 pancakes and one pressure allowed. He also caught a TD in a bi-district playoff victory.

Mason Wright, Sr., OL, Post

Wright graded 97% with 62 pancakes.

Zayden Pittman, Jr., utility, Ropes

Pittman, the unanimous district MVP, played quarterback, running back and receiver. He was 23 of 37 passing for 372 yards and eight TDs, ran for 441 yards and 13 TDs and had 29 catches for 343 yards and seven TDs. He also notched four punt-return TDs.

Champ Clanahan, Sr., DL, Shallowater

Clanahan, the district defensive MVP, made 70 tackles, including nine for a loss, four sacks and a defensive TD.

Peytan Moyers, Jr., DL, Idalou

Moyers recorded 88 tackles (58 solo), including 25 for a loss, 10 sacks, 15 QB hurries and one fumble recovery.

Victor Saenz, Sr., DL, Ropes

Saenz was the district defensive MVP with 207 tackles (64 solo), including 48 for a loss, five sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, one interception, three pass breakups and five QB pressures. He scored three defensive TDs.

Hunter Burrell, Sr., LB, New Home

Burrell posted 125 tackles, including 16 for a loss, and a sack.

A.J. Huddleston, Jr., LB, Idalou

Huddleston recorded 115 tackles (86 solo), including 10 for a loss, one sack, three QB hurries, one pass breakup, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Dalton Martin, Sr., LB, New Deal

Martin was the district MVP with 122 tackles (88 solo), including 14 for a loss, two sacks, eight pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

Mason Martinez, Sr., LB, Slaton

Martinez, the district co-defensive MVP, recorded 150 tackles (85 solo), including five for a loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery through 10 games. Final stats were not provided.

Martin Cano, Fr., DB, Hale Center

Cano had 106 tackles (68 solo), including one for a loss, four interceptions, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

Cruz Dickson, Jr., DB, Shallowater

Dickson posted 59 tackles and six interceptions.

Kolter Dockery, Jr., DB, Ropes

Dockery recorded 124 tackles (33 solo), including nine for a loss, five interceptions, 16 pass breakups and a defensive TD.

Z’Qedrian Whaley, Jr., DB, Slaton

Whaley posted 31 tackles (24 solo), including one for a loss, and five interceptions through 11 games. Final stats were not provided.

Jacob Acosta, Sr., K, Denver City

Acosta converted 21 of 23 PAT attempts and hit 2 of 3 field-goal tries.

Caleb Groetken, Sr., P, Sudan

Groetken punted 18 times with an average of 38 yards, including a long of 71 yards. He downed two inside the 20-yard line.

Rick Perez, Jr., KR, Roosevelt

Perez amassed 415 return yards and two kickoff-return TDs.
