People looking to pick up medical cannabis prescriptions can now do so in Lubbock.
Texas Original, a licensed medical cannabis company based in Bastrop, is one of 15 licensed dispensing organizations. With the latest expansion of the Texas Compassionate Use Program in House Bill 46, the company has grown to several cities, including Lubbock.
“The biggest structural changes happened this past legislative session with HB 46,” said Nico Richardson, CEO for Texas Original. “The primary thing, from a structural standpoint, was we’re allowed to have what are called satellite locations now. It’s about to get a lot more accessible for patients. They can actually walk into one of our locations like it’s a pharmacy and pick up their medication that day.”
Prior to this, patients had to order online and wait between a day and a week for delivery. Satellite locations work similar to pharmacies, where inventory can be kept on-site overnight.
What is Texas Original Lubbock?
Texas Original started in 2018, just three years after the Texas Compassionate Use Program began. It has seen the program grow from focusing on pediatric epilepsy to the latest expansion for chronic pain in 2025. The company, based in Bastrop, grows the cannabis, extracts the cannabinoids and terpenes, makes the medicine, and tests it internally. The medicine is then sent to the Texas Department of Public Safety for additional testing and approval before going onto the market. Texas Original is also responsible for distribution and retail of the products.
“We do everything, other than prescribe the medication,” Richardson said. “We’re not just the distributor. Every piece of the supply chain is one of these dispensing organizations.”
Texas Original offers medical cannabis in the forms of gummies, topical ointments, concentrates, beverages, chocolates and tinctures. Vaporization products could be coming soon, once approved by the Texas DPS.
Texas Original has locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including its new Bastrop headquarters that launched in October 2025. It recently opened satellite locations in Plano and San Antonio, and pickup locations in Nacogdoches and Tyler.
“It was incredibly difficult to serve patients outside of a 100, 200 mile radius of our facility if we had to bring product back every single night,” Richardson said. “The rule changes now really help us expand the program and get better accessibility for patients across the state.”
The company plans to continue expanding, with locations coming to Abilene and Corpus Christi, according to Richardson.
Where is Texas Original Lubbock?
421 Frankford Ave., Suite B, which was previously Papa Murphy’s Pizza. The Lubbock location will serve as a pick-up spot for people to get their prescribed medical cannabis.
“When we look at where to expand our facilities, we look for population density, but we also look for where our existing patients already are that are having difficulty accessing their medicine,” Richardson said. “So, we’re making sure that we’re putting our new pickup and satellite locations where the patients are, to give them better accessibility. And, within your Public Health Region, Lubbock was the obvious choice.”
When is Texas Original Lubbock open?
Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Texas Original hopes to expand hours soon, once it is permitted as a satellite location. Once it is, it will operate similarly to a pharmacy with more days and hours with medicine on site.
Is medical cannabis legal in Texas?
Yes. The Texas Compassionate Use Program, which started in 2015, allowed for limited use of medical cannabis for certain conditions. In June 2025, Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 46, which extended the program. This expansion added more accepted conditions, methods, and issued more licenses to providers.
“Not a lot of people understand that we do have a medical marijuana program here,” Richardson said. “It has grown significantly, and there are now many more products and many more conditions that are approved for patients to receive those products. I think, in general, Texas needs to have a better awareness that the program even exists, and that goes to potential patients out there and doctors.”
Richardson said around 900 doctors are registered to prescribe in the TCUP program out of more than 80,000 certified physicians in Texas.
How can medical cannabis be used in Texas?
A prescription must be made by a medical professional, who will then put it into the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas operated by DPS. Once the prescription is uploaded, the patient can order product
Medical cannabis can only be used for certain conditions in Texas, including:
As of February 2026, 141,987 people are in the program, according to a report by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
