Lubbock-Cooper Liberty wins second boys golf state championship

The Lubbock-Cooper Liberty boys golf team won its second state championship in three years after wrapping up the title Tuesday.

The Patriots finished with a two-round total of 584, five strokes ahead of runner-up Andrews in Class 4A. Mabank earned third place with a 603. Liberty’s second team tied for fifth at 618.

The Patriots shot the best score each day, closing with a final-round 294 at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

Reed Blacklock tied for third place to lead the way. He carded a 142 total, which included a 69 in opening round. All five players on the first team finished in the top 20.

Cole Barr (eighth place, 146), Jackson Ballou (tied 10th, 148), Jay Ewing (tied 10th, 148) and Cy Jones (18th, 150) rounded out the group.

The Patriots won the 3A state championship in their debut season in 2024.

Idalou’s Kallaway Soto earns medal at 3A state golf

Idalou’s Kallaway Soto shot a two-round 142 to finish third in 3A at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Soto was tied for the lead with a first-round 68. He wrapped up with a 74 on Tuesday to finish one stroke behind Nacogdoches Central Heights’ Andrew Bird. Gunter’s Austin Anderson won the individual title with a 136, shooting 68 each day.

Bryson Clark tied for eighth with a 149 to lead Shallowater to a fifth-place tie with Central Heights and Llano. Karson Motheral, Logan Winn, Mason Cypert and Witten Kincaid helped the Mustangs shoot 639.

South Plains has pair in top 3 in 2A

Farwell’s Cooper Nichols won a playoff against Sundown’s Isaiah Igo to finish as 2A individual runner-up Tuesday at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin. Each finished with a two-round 136, which was one stroke behind state champ Zander Zafar of Tioga.

Nichols stormed into title contention with a 66 in the second round — the best score of the tournament. Igo was tied for the lead with a 67 in the opening round.

Post’s Carter Petty (tied sixth place, 142) and New Home’s Zack Armes (tied eighth, 143) also represented the South Plains in the top 10. Farwell’s Braddock Foster was 12th with a 146 to help the Steers to a fifth place finish in the team standings with 623.

New Home was sixth (635) and Sundown eighth (656).

Sundown’s Drew Igo (16th, 151) was the area’s only other top-20 finisher.

UIL Class 1A boys golf state results

Springlake-Earth’s Froylan Agundiz turned in a 158 to place third in the 1A state tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander.

Whitharral’s Copper Popelka finished eighth with a 164. The Panthers had the area’s best finish at eighth with 739 total.

Jayton (763) placed 10th, led by Brylen Bezner’s 178, which tied for 19th place.
