Joseph Waldron has officially signed on as the new superintendent of Abilene ISD after being named the lone finalist for the job on Feb. 25.
His April 2 superintendent’s contract states that Waldron’s initial term in his new role will be June 1 through June 30, 2029.
He will receive an annual base salary of $304,750 to be paid in equal installments on a 12-month basis, the contract said.
In comparison, current Superintendent John Kuhn signed a $300,000 annual base salary contract on April 25, 2024.
During the term of Waldron’s contract, the district will supplement his salary with an equal amount of his contribution to the Texas Teacher Retirement System, the contract said. The district will also provide for a supplemental retirement plan for Waldron in the form of additional salary.
Waldron’s contract also states that the district will cover the cost for Waldron’s membership in two unspecified local civic organizations to promote participation within the community.
The district will also pay Waldron’s membership dues to the American Association of School Administrators and the Texas Association of School Administrators.
All superintendent business expenses incurred will also be covered by the School Board, including but not limited to mileage, airline tickets, hotels and rental cars, the contract said. Waldron will also be provided with a cell phone for personal and professional use.
Kuhn is stepping down for health reasons after suffering a heart attack on Dec. 30.
Previously the superintendent for Mineral Wells ISD, Kuhn stepped in for retiring AISD Superintendent David Young.
