How 5 former Texas A&M quarterbacks performed in Week 1 of the 2025 season

Texas A&M’s recent history developing quarterbacks has become one of the more underrated storylines in college football, and while former QB turned tight end Eli Stowers, who has become an elite player for the Vanderbilt Commodores, is undoubtedly the most interesting, four former Aggie signal callers are now starters, while a fifth could be back in the drivers seat heading into Week 2.

After the 2022 season, Haynes King, who battled several injuries and was not used correctly, transferred to Georgia Tech and has not looked back since. Entering a power running scheme, King’s speed and toughness have led to 4,962 yards, 41 passing touchdowns, 1,324 rushing yards, and 21 touchdowns during his first two seasons.

Conner Weigman’s injury-riddled 2024 season, combined with current starting QB Marcel Reed winning the job, led to his transfer to Houston, where he threw for two touchdowns in his Cougars debut.

Zach Calzada, who will never have to pay for a meal in College Station again after leading the Aggies to the program’s second win over Alabama, then the No. 1-ranked team during the 2021 season, first transferred to Auburn before settling in with Incarnate Word, where he started for two seasons, including 3,744 yards and 35 touchdowns last season. Now with Kentucky, Calzada is back in the SEC.

Max Johnson, who transferred to North Carolina after the 2023 season, dealt with a horrific leg injury, missing the 2024 campaign, but made his way back to the field on Monday night after Tar Heels starting QB Gio Lopez left with an injury, finishing 9/11 for 103 yards and a touchdown pass to his brother, former Texas A&M tight end Jake Johnson.

Lastly, Jaylen Henderson, who served as a reliable backup/starter for the Aggies during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, found his new home with West Virginia.
