High school football: Memorial DL James, Holliday QB Jones lead 54 on Week 2 Honor Roll

The second week of the high school football season featured multiple non-district matchups that came down the wire.

Perhaps the headliner was Class 3A Division II No. 6 Holliday edging reigning Class 2A Division II champion Muenster in a 48-44 shootout.

At Joe Golding Field, Memorial senior quarterback Joe Castles scored his first rushing TD with 45 seconds left, leading the Mavericks to a 33-26 victory against Frenship.

City View held off Windthorst for a 27-20 victory in the best game featuring two teams from the Wichita Falls area, while Henrietta spoiled Burkburnett’s homecoming with a tight 21-18 victory.

Here are eight standout performances from the 54 athletes appearing on this week’s Honor Roll.

Brodie Jackson, RB, Petrolia

Jackson was the featured back in Petrolia’s wing-T offense during a 58-8 victory against Olney, racking up 211 yards rushing and three TDs. On defense, Jackson had three tackles, including one for loss, and an interception.

Micah James, DL, Memorial

James doesn’t look like a defensive end, listed at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, particularly at the Class 5A level. But Frenship struggled to block the Memorial senior, and he terrorized the Tigers’ backfield with eight tackles, including six for loss and five sacks, in the Mavericks’ thrilling 33-26 victory.

James recorded his first sack on Frenship’s fourth play from scrimmage, and his final one on the second to last play of the game.

Kota Johnson, RB, Iowa Park

The Hawks picked up an impressive victory Friday, beating Mineral Wells 33-20 with Johnson carrying the offensive load. The junior tailback rushed for a career-best 244 yards and four TDs, and the Hawks improved to a somewhat surprising 2-0 to start the season.

Landon Jones, QB, Holliday

Jones took over full-time behind center for the Eagles, thriving as a dual-threat in Holliday’s 48-44 victory against reigning Class 2A Division II champion Muenster.

While his counterpart, Muenster’s Casen Carney, accounted for 496 yards (218 rushing, 278 passing), Jones wasn’t outclassed, rushing for 193 yards and passing for 168. He also recorded 12 tackles on defense.

Rayder Mann, QB, Bowie

Officially, Bowie’s matchup with Bridgeport will go down as a cancelation and no contest with the game called shortly after halftime with ongoing thunderstorms in the area. Bowie led 21-14 at the time.

Technically, that could wipe out any stats accrued from that game, but what Mann did in one half of action is worth noting. Bowie’s senior quarterback rushed for 179 yards and two TDs, passing for another 66 yards. He also recorded an interception on defense.

Ja’Riyis Williams, WR, Munday

Williams wasn’t just a receiver in Munday’s 49-0 victory against Winters, lining up behind center in the Moguls’ Wildcat package. This resulted in Williams rushing for 197 yards and two TDs on just two carries. He also caught a 48-yard TD pass from Haiden Bowman, giving Williams 245 yards from scrimmage.

Bowman also had an efficient night, completing 7 of 13 passes for 111 yards and four TDs.

Malachi Williams, QB, City View

Williams led City View to an impressive 27-20 victory against Windthorst — the seventh-ranked team in Class 2A Division II. The senior quarterback passed for 222 yards and three TDs while rushing for 95 yards and another score.

Williams has developed a great connection with receiver Hunner Brown, who had 187 total yards and three TDs. Brown currently leads the Wichita Falls area with 282 yards receiving and five TDs on eight receptions.

Lee Yeley, SB, Saint Jo

Yeley is a return entry from last week after scoring in every phase during Saint Jo’s 78-43 victory against Gold-Burg. Yeley had 148 yards from scrimmage and three TDs, and passed for 114 yards and three TDs. He also returned a kickoff for a score and notched 11 tackles with a 23-yard interception return TD on defense.
