Hereford police say man who drove through golf course, fled on foot arrested

A police pursuit in Hereford that went through part of a golf course Monday afternoon ended in a man’s arrest.

The Hereford Police Department said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop around 11 a.m. Monday, May 4 on a tan colored GMC pickup in the 400 block of Barrett Street, for failing to signal intent to turn and expired registration.

Police said the driver, later identified as 32-year-old Luis Alvarez fled from officers, which led to a vehicle pursuit. Alvarez attempted to elude several officers, including ones from the Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office and Deaf Smith County Constable’s office, by driving through the John Pitman Municipal Golf Course, causing damage to the fencing and playable course area.

Prior to the pursuit ending, police said Alvarez threw a firearm out of the vehicle, but it was later recovered. He then fled from vehicle prior to it fully stopping and attempted to evade officers on foot.

After a short foot pursuit, Alvarez was taken into custody in connection with multiple charges, including evading arrest in a motor vehicle, unlawful carrying of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and criminal mischief. He was taken via ambulance to Hereford Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered during the incident, which remains under investigation.
