The Sam Houston State Bearkats come to Austin tonight for the final non-conference warmup of the Texas Longhorns season. The Horns will have a bye next week, then travel to the Swamp to take on Florida in the SEC conference season opener.
The Texas offense will be the focus tonight. UT quarterback Arch Manning has yet to live up to expectations, causing opinions throughout the college football world speculating about what’s wrong. Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt thinks he’s rushing, while former Heisman winner Tim Tebow just wants to encourage him.
If Manning struggles against SHSU, then it’s probably time for Longhorns fans to panic. At least about 2025. But the UT QB isn’t the only worry on offense. Texas’ top two running backs are out tonight with injury. The offensive line has struggled, especially run blocking.
The Longhorns defense on the other hand should have a huge night. The unit might be the best in the nation and has helped to buy time for Manning and the offense to get better.

Texas vs. Sam Houston Prediction
Well, we’ve been waiting for Arch Manning and the Texas offense to have a good game and I believe they will put up the biggest numbers of the season against the Bearkats. Will the Longhorns offense be perfect? Dominant? Probably not, but SHSU is probably the worst defense Texas will face all year. If they can’t get it going here, then see you in 2026.
On defense, Sam Houston returns starting QB Hunter Watson from injury. But it won’t matter. The Texas defense might be one of the best in the nation.
Final Score: Texas 41, SHSU 3
