A recall involving nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs has been upgraded to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s highest-risk classification.
The FDA reclassified the recall on Aug. 12 as Class I, the FDA’s most serious recall category. The agency defines a Class I recall as one in which there is a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could cause serious health consequences or death.
Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. is voluntarily recalling 1,589,577 dozen white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs that were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi, and other smaller retail outlets.
The eggs were produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3, with sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and Aug. 17.
As of July 24, no deaths have been reported, but the salmonella outbreak linked to the recalled eggs has sickened at least 98 people and hospitalized 26 across 17 states. Illnesses were reported between Nov. 21, 2025, and June 30.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the recall said. Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Midwest Poultry Services, L.P stopped distributing fresh eggs from its Texas farms, but some of the recalled eggs carry best-by and sell-by dates through Aug. 17, meaning consumers may still have them at home.

The recalled white and brown cage-free eggs have an identifying code printed on the left or right sides of the carton in date-coding ink. Only the codes P-1950 or 0840962 with a Julian date between 157 and 184 are recalled, according to the report.
