Farmers' Almanac winter forecast for 2025-2026: How much snow will Texas and NM get?

While summer has yet to come to a close, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its predictions for Winter 2025-2026.

The Almanac forecasts “Chill, Snow, Repeat” weather patterns for the upcoming winter season, and while the northern part of the country is likely to experience snowy conditions, the frigid temperatures and white stuff may not reach as far south this year.

Winter doesn’t officially start until Dec. 21, but here is what’s ahead, according to the Almanac.

Texas, New Mexico expected to be cold and wet

Texas and parts of New Mexico, as well as the Southern Plains (western Kansas, Oklahoma, and portions of Nebraska) are on tap for a wetter-than-average winter with periodic cold snaps.

While snow will be limited, the region may face several cold rain events and occasional freezing precipitation, particularly in northern areas, according to the Almanac.

“We don’t see too much snow, but we’re feeling like some of these more northern areas in this region may have icy rain and the cold conditions, so you might want to make sure you have deicer and your boots ready,” Farmers’ Almanac Editor Sandi Duncan told USA TODAY.

A wet winter is also predicted in the Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, California) with near-average temperatures.

Did the Farmers’ Almanac get its winter weather prediction right last year?

According to the Almanac, its 2024-2025 forecast “for a mild winter in Texas and the Southern Plains hit the mark.”

The Almanac also notes, “We also accurately forewarned of a very cold spell at the end of January,” perhaps referencing some of winter 2024-2025’s milestones, including the arctic air mass that contributed to cold weather advisories that month. “But La Niña threw a curveball, leaving us with fewer wet weather events than expected,” the Almanac said.
