With the type of offense it possesses, the Chapin High School softball team is never out of a game.
Entering Tuesday, March 24, District 1-5A road game at Canutillo, Chapin had scored double-digit runs in 17 of its previous 24 runs.
The Huskies once again showed their powerful offense in rallying for a 14-13 win, due in large part to a nine-run sixth inning that erased an 11-5 deficit.
“One through nine, we have a really good lineup,” Huskies coach Kevin Mills said. “We’ve shown the ability to come from behind and to put up big numbers in innings.”
The depth of talent on offense showed with five players earning multiple hits. Khole Jensen and Josy Jaime-Garcia had three hits apiece and Ari Manriquez, Addy Rocha and Kaylee Himes had two hits apiece. Jensen drove in three runs and both Himes and Rocha drove in two runs.
“We dug down and pulled through,” Jensen said. “I have no doubt in our offense one through nine, we play for each other.”
Added Pena: “Our backs were against the ball we had to step up. It was about us having to come together. I love being in position to fight back.”
Jensen and Pena helped the team in the circle. Jensen pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Pena struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the win.
Chapin improves to 3-0 in district, Canutillo is 2-1.
