El Paso police arrested a man who allegedly eluded a large police response during a robbery of a Downtown shop earlier this month.
Police arrested Rodolfo Madrid Torres, 57, on an aggravated robbery charge on Tuesday, May 19, in connection with the robbery on the afternoon of May 6 in the 900 block of South Stanton Street close to the Stanton international bridge, stated a police news release by spokeswoman Stephanie Shields.
Torres is accused of entering a business, assaulting the owner and demanding money but the owner was able to break free and locked the robbery suspect inside the building, police said.
Officers responding to a call of a robbery in progress arrived, believing that the robber was still inside the building and leading to police blocking off and surrounding the area until the building was searched. It was later determined that the robbery suspect had exited the building and fled before officers arrived, police reported.
Cash and the shop owner’s wallet were stolen and an investigation later allegedly identified Torres as the robber, police said.
Torres, of Central El Paso, was booked into the El Paso County Jail in Downtown on Wednesday, May 20, on an aggravated robbery charge. He is being held on a $20,000 bond, according to a jail log.
