The Texas Tech football team has a lot of uncertainty about who’ll be its quarterback in 2026. At the same time, the Red Raiders are continuing to add talent for rosters a few years down the road.
On Monday, June 1, Tech landed a commitment from Denton Guyer defensive tackle Khyren Haywood, a Texas top-100 prospect on the 247Sports composite index of multiple recruiting services.
Guyer, listed at 6-foot-1 and 265 pounds, was credited last season with 66 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss with 11 sacks. That came in 14 games for a Guyer team that finished 11-3. He was the District 5-6A defensive player of the year and a Class 6A third-team all-state honoree by the Texas Sports Writers Association.
According to recruiting services, Haywood’s been offered scholarships by more than 30 schools, among the most notable being Florida State, LSU, Mississippi, Oregon, Southern California, Texas and Texas A&M.
Haywood’s commitment gives the Red Raiders 10 pledges for their 2027 recruiting class. He’s the fifth defensive lineman, following defensive tackles Jalen Brewster from Cedar Hill and K’Adrian Redmond from DeSoto and edge defenders Anthony Sweeney from Baltimore St. Francis Academy and Brody Pfannenstiel from Hoisington, Kansas.
Also in the fold on the defensive side is linebacker Jhadyn Nelson from Houston Langham Creek.
Tech’s four offensive commitments are skill-position players: quarterback Kavian Bryant from Palestine Westwood, running back SaRod Baker from DeSoto and wide receivers Benny Easter Jr. from Humble Summer Creek and Julian Caldwell from Argyle.
