Deaf Smith County head-on crash on US 385 leaves 1 dead, 4 injured

One person died and four others were injured, including three children, after a head-on crash in Deaf Smith County on Thursday morning, authorities said.

Kelly Wagner, 57, of Vega, was taken by LifeStar to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries, where she later died, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

DPS said a preliminary investigation showed that Wagner was in a 2022 Ford Explorer stopped in a private drive east of US 385, south of Vega, about 7:25 a.m. Oct. 23, and a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was heading north on US 385 and approaching the private drive from the south.

Failing to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic, the Explorer entered the roadway in the path of the Silverado on US 385, resulting in a head-on collision. Wagner, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.

The four occupants of the Silverado were wearing their seat belts. The driver, a 27-year-old woman, and three girls ages 9, 6 and 4, all from Hereford, were taken by ambulance to Hereford Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

The road was dry with cloudy conditions and a posted speed limit of 75 mph. The crash remains under investigation.
