The slowest part of the NFL offseason, that stretch between the May schedule release and the start of camp in July, just got a little livelier with the coach of a Dallas Cowboys division rival taunting the Cowboys with some late May bulletin board material.
A pundit thinks the Cowboys should make a run at a veteran running back to flesh out an area where Dallas appears thin, and Dallas doesn’t have that much more time to do it before organized team activities start up.
There’s not much going on right now in the Cowboys’ world, so let’s see who is generating headlines.
John Harbaugh
John Harbaugh, the new New York Giants coach and the 14th-winningest coach in NFL history, didn’t need long to hand the Dallas Cowboys some bulletin board material.
On Monday, the Giants held their annual Town Hall, a chance for fans to ask selected players and coaches questions, and Harbaugh was asked about the team’s recent struggles in the division, particularly against the Cowboys. Since 2017, Dallas has gone 16-2 against the Giants.
“I’ll be nice and politically correct,” Harbaugh replied. “I could care less about what’s happened last year, or the year before that, or ten years before that. Honestly, I don’t give a crap about any of it. Not one bit. All I care about is tomorrow’s practice. Because if tomorrow’s practice is the way it’s supposed to be, that’ll be one more step in the direction of being a good enough football team to kick the Cowboys’ ass.”
He’ll get a chance to back that up right out of the chute, as the Giants host the Cowboys in Week 1 on the Sunday Night Football opener (Sept. 13).
Nick Chubb
One of the bigger names still on the free agent market is running back Nick Chubb. The 30-year-old is on the back end of his career but still looking to play after a solid season with Houston last year.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen has a list of 14 top free agents still on the market with the best landing spot for each, and he thinks the Cowboys should make Chubb a depth signing.
Bowen writes: “A veteran grinder at this point of his career, Chubb could provide value as the Cowboys’ No. 2 or No. 3 option behind starter Javonte Williams. Chubb can still secure catches on swings and checkdowns in the passing game, but he should be viewed as an early-down option who can use his power and vision in short-yardage situations. He rushed for 520 yards in Houston last season.”
Dallas’ current running back room is Williams, Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Williams is the only one of that bunch who is proven.
Cowboys OTAs
Dallas Cowboys training camp 2026
The Dallas Cowboys begin their voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs) June 1 at tier facility in Frisco. The on-field sessions are June 1–2, June 4, June 8–9, and June 11 and serve as the first opportunity for the rookie class to work with the veterans.
Dallas is holding its mandatory minicamp shortly after that, June 16-18. Their fall camp now has a start date, as the team will assemble on July 21 in Oxnard, Calif. Those practices at River Ridge Playing Fields are open to the public and free. Dallas will break camp on Aug. 14 and then head to Seattle to open the preseason on Aug. 15 against the Seahawks.
Dallas Cowboys draft picks 2026
Dallas added seven players in the 2026 draft and the class was well received on the report cards.
