Whew. Monday ended up being quite the day in the NFL. But prior to the blockbuster trades and the marquee signings that made headlines in the afternoon hours, the eyes of Cowboys Nation were first glued to The Star in Frisco as the team’s organized team activities (OTAs) kicked off. There will be lots of questions to be answered (or not) over the next 10-day span, but the biggest of all is whether franchise-tagged wide receiver George Pickens will attend. Day One spoiler: He did not. But remember, it’s all still voluntary at this point. The media gets its first access on Thursday.
In addition to OTAs starting, the Cowboys signed a new wide receiver, but ex-SMU Mustang Romello Brinson faces a long climb up the Dallas depth chart. PFF says deciding between Dak Prescott and Tony Romo was the toughest call in putting together their all-star squad of the last 20 years, and as one of the game’s true legends passes away, we look back at the Cowboys connections that made Raymond Berry’s football life even more extraordinary than “The Greatest Game Ever Played.”
Then we crack into the Myles Garrett trade. The Cowboys stayed out of the mix to get the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and it’s debatable if they could have even put together an offer if they’d wanted to. Social media had plenty to say about the Rams showing Jerry Jones what “all-in” really looks like. And the Cowboys will get an up-close look at Garrett in his new colors later this year… extending an unusual streak of road tripping to face the reigning DPOY.
Today’s headlines also dissect the deal from both the Rams’ and Browns’ perspectives, with this being the rare swap that actually gives both teams exactly what they need at this point in time. Garrett becomes just the latest megastar to join the supernova sports constellation in Los Angeles, but don’t forget that Jared Verse was a part of Monday’s trade, too. In fact, he was the key piece of the puzzle.
The Garrett deal wasn’t the only high-profile transaction to rock the NFL to start the work week. The Eagles and Patriots finally consummated their much-anticipated agreement to ship A.J. Brown out of Philly, and the Giants brought in a boatload of new wide receivers, all with names you know. Also, Russell Wilson hangs up his cleats for a microphone, and Illinois legislators have officially left the door open for the Bears move across state lines, although the issue is still very much up in the air.
