Carney, Hess lead Muenster football to back-to-back state titles

Casen Carney and Garrett Hess led the way as Muenster football blanked Shiner 28-0 on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, to secure the program’s second consecutive UIL Class 2A Division II state championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Carney accounted for four touchdowns, while Hess caught three of them to help the Hornets control the game from the opening quarter.

Muenster (14-2) struck first after a Shiner turnover by scoring on a Carney 4-yard touchdown run. On the next Hornet possession, Hess hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0.

The Hornets pulled away in the second half when Hess and Carney linked up two more times on a 34-yard touchdown pass and a 12-yard touchdown throw to push the lead to 28-0.

Carney completed 9 of 10 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns to be named the offensive most valuable player of the championship game.

Hess finished with four catches for 107 yards as he and Carney combined for 348 yards of offense and four touchdowns in the victory.

Rhett Walterscheid was named the game’s defensive most valuable player after finishing with eight tackles, (six solo) and 4.5 for loss.

The win secured Muenster’s third shutout of the season to complete its championship campaign on a 12-game winning streak.
