The San Angelo Standard-Times will be previewing local high school football teams throughout August ahead of the 2025 season.
Brady Bulldogs
District: 5-3A DII
2024 record: 8-3,4-1
Head coach: Jaron Roberts
Most recent district championship: 2021
State titles: N/A
What to know
Roberts said he is excited about the varsity leadership and experience on this year’s team, particularly with four-year starter quarterback Sean Jacoby, who Roberts described as “like a second coach on the field.”
The Bulldogs return 22 lettermen to their program, including seven starters on offense and defense. Like in previous years, Roberts said everything starts in the trenches for Brady, especially with standout players Demarcus Reed, Nasir Menefield, Caden Gillaspia and Zach Ledezma along the offensive and defensive lines.
Brady did lose some talent to graduation at the skill positions, but Roberts is particularly thrilled to have running back Ashton Taylor back after he had 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns rushing in 2024. Along with Taylor’s return, role players like Alijah Stark, Ethan Bernal and Emilio Godinez are expected to take on bigger roles this season.
It took Roberts one year to turn Brady into a postseason contender, after the team started 3-8 in its first year and finished 8-3 the following season. The next step for the Bulldogs, though, is getting past their bi-district matchup, which will be no easy task, as they are paired with a district that includes 3A D-II powerhouses Holliday, Jacksboro, and Wichita Falls City View.
Coach Jaron Roberts on the 2025 season
“We do have a veteran team coming back with us on the varsity level,” Roberts said. “Those guys have come in and know what we expect out of them as coaches, and we’re very familiar with our kids in our program now, being in the third year. We feel like we’re a little bit ahead of schedule as far as what we wanted to kind of get installed and accomplished from a conditioning standpoint on offense, defense and special teams… We’ve kind of got the same approach as we did last year. We’re going into a competitive district. I think any of the six teams could be the four that make the playoffs. And so, we’re focusing on the early part of the season and the pre-district schedule, and working on fully getting our team prepared to have some success and carry some momentum in the district.”
