Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has finally received a much-needed update in his legal battle with the NCAA. Per Pete Nakos, a hearing for his request for a temporary injunction has officially been set for June 1 at 9 a.m. CT in Lubbock County. Sorsby is seeking immediate eligibility for the 2026 season while his broader case against the NCAA moves through the legal process.
The hearing date comes sooner than originally requested by Sorsby’s legal team, and on the heels of the judge overseeing the case recusing himself. In court filings earlier this week, Sorsby’s legal team originally sought a June 15 hearing, citing the June 22 deadline for the NFL Supplemental Draft as a key factor in needing a swift resolution. A June 1 hearing gives the Texas Tech quarterback a faster path toward some sort of clarity on whether or not he will be allowed to play college football for the 2026 season.
Sorsby filed suit against the NCAA on Monday after Texas Tech declared him ineligible. The lawsuit came amid an investigation into gambling activity that reportedly included sports wagers made while he was a student-athlete at Indiana. Sorsby entered a residential treatment for a gambling addiction back in April. In the lawsuit, Sorsby argues the NCAA has delayed a decision regarding his reinstatement and claims he would suffer “irreparable harm” if unable to play during his final college season.
The legal case also saw an unexpected twist on Wednesday when Judge Phillip Hays recused himself from court proceedings. For Texas Tech, the June 1 hearing now becomes one of the most consequential offseason dates on the calendar.
