Bad Bunny Super Bowl show sparks FCC complaints from El Paso residents

Half a dozen complaints were filed with the Federal Communications Commission from the El Paso area over Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance in February.

The FCC released a total of 2,155 complaints it received in five separate batches about the Super Bowl, most of which concerned the Bad Bunny halftime show. The complaints were filed across the country, but Texas, Florida and California filed the most — in that order, according to WIRED, which filed an open records request.

El Paso Times analyzed the complaints and found that six were from the El Paso region, including two from Las Cruces and one from Alamogordo. Most focused on the lyrics, which complaints called “despicable” and “pornographic.”

“I am a Hispanic Catholic home with children and found the half time show to be very offensive in language and dance. It is my understanding this type of language is not to be displayed on regular daytime television no matter whatlanguage. In our home we understand both English and Spanish,” one complaint from Las Cruces read.

Another complaint from Las Cruces said lyrics for “were extremely explicit and not appropriate for television,” while a complaint from Alamogordo stated that “themes” were shown without warning.

In El Paso, a resident in the ZIP code 79934 said the performance was “not appropriate and needs to be addressed,” writing, “The lyrics were despicable. There is no reason only English-speaking audiences should have more protection than Spanish speaking audiences.”

A 79902 resident said the show was full of “vulgarity” in their complaint.

“The Super Bowl Half time show was full of vulgarity and sexual deprivation. It was Bad Bunny spewing pornographic lyrics on a Sunday when I was with my kids trying to enjoy our Sunday. I don’t care it was in Spanish, we are sick andtired of the NFL sexualizing what should have been a good family day,” the complaint read.

Finally, a complaint from the 79924 ZIP code said the language during the performance was “indecent.”
