Amarillo police say man accused of stealing sports, Pokémon cards linked to Lubbock burglary

The Amarillo Police Department shared with the community Aug. 26 that a burglary suspect was taken into custody after various trading cards, including from sports and Pokémon series, were stolen from an Amarillo store earlier this month. The suspect was also reportedly connected to another incident in Lubbock.

APD said in a Facebook post that Mike’s Sports Cards, inside White Lotus Spa, was burglarized on Aug. 15, just after 2 a.m. Police said about $40,000 worth of sports cards and Pokémon cards were stolen.

“Thanks to the quick work of our APD Crime Analysts, Detectives, and Patrol Officers, the suspect — 38-year-old Daniel Zavala — was identified and taken into custody,” APD said in the post. “During the investigation, officers recovered about $30,000 worth of stolen property, including most of the stolen cards, several stolen license plates, and even plans for future burglaries. Zavala has also been linked to a separate burglary in Lubbock in July.”

APD thanked everyone involved in working on the case for “going above and beyond” and noted it highights the teamwork across its Patrol Division, Crime Analysts, and Property Crimes Detectives.

“Their hard work and coordination made it possible to solve this case quickly and return stolen property to the victim,” APD said.
