Abilene ISD to launch new arts program

Abilene ISD has announced the coming launch of the new Center for Arts and Innovation, the community’s first advanced fine arts program for high-achieving fifth-grade students.

Opening the 2026-27 school year, the application-based program will be hosted by the McMurry University campus and combine accelerated academic programming in science and mathematics with a new dedicated fine arts pathway, including art, theatre, dance and music, according to a media release.

“Abilene ISD is committed to expanding access to high-quality learning,” said Superintendent John Kuhn. “Through our Building Brighter Futures initiative, we’re pursuing opportunities for innovation for our elementary learners. This is the latest step in ensuring that every AISD family can choose a learning path that fits their child’s needs and interests.”

The new center is an expansion of the district’s long-standing Center for Innovation program and will be led by experienced AISD teachers. According to the district, students will benefit from an immersive learning environment that includes access to collegiate facilities and guest instruction by McMurry faculty.

“At McMurry, we believe education should inspire both the mind and the spirit,” said McMurry University President Lynne Murray.

“The Center for Arts and Innovation embodies that vision by blending academic excellence with creative expression,” Murray said. “We are proud to support Abilene ISD in creating opportunities that empower students to discover their gifts and begin making their mark at an early age.”

In addition, AISD has partnered with local organizations to provide field trips and on-site experiences through collaboration with the Abilene Philharmonic, Young Audiences, The Grace Museum and more.

Applications for the 2026-27 school year are open from April 1 to 15. Families can apply and learn more at www.abileneisd.org/CAI
