2027 5-star OT is 'all in' with Texas A&M and helping recruit

Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class top-ranked commit, five-star offensive lineman Mark Matthews, chose the Aggies over the Miami Hurricanes, as the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas blue-chipper made it clear during his commitment announcement that third-year coach Mike Elko is building something in College Station, and he wants nothing more than to be a part of it.

Still, early commitments from five-star prospects are never set in stone, especially if other official visits are in play. However, Mark Matthews told 247Sports insider Zack Blostein that he was no longer taking separate official visits and hopes to take “back-to-back” trips to College Station this summer.

“I’m not taking OVs anywhere else, so I want to take [visits] back-to-back,” Matthews stated.”

While his relationship with Elko and O-line coach Adam Cushing stands out, Matthews’ has continued to spend time with most of the Aggies’ 17 commitments in the 2027 cycle, who he described as “good players, athletes, and dogs” who all feel like Texas A&M is on the cusp of becoming a blue-blood program focused on development, which officially began after a record ten players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“People want to win,” Matthews stated. “The coaching staff and the development have shown the athletes in Florida that they’re doing something. We’re just going to keep recruiting, next class, next class, and just keep being great.”

Speaking of Florida, the Aggies landed four-star edge Frederick Ards III and three-star athlete Loia Valade, who chose the Aggies over staying in the Sunshine State on Tuesday afternoon. While Mark Matthews has yet to officially shut down his recruitment, this is as close as it gets.
