Whatever happened to our “checks and balances” system? The Republicans are in power, but they have given over that power to President Donald Trump for fear of losing their personal money and political power. That sounds like anarchy to me. In so doing, the Republicans have given up their honor.
Republicans should be fearing us, the people who vote. Please, get a clue!
This president doesn’t care about who or what he hurts—whether it be the people, education, science, our allies, or even his friends. He sees this country as one huge and beautiful pot of gold. He thinks he owns this country, just as he would a store. If you want to live here, he sets the price you must pay to do so.
There are many gods that various people worship, and President Trump has several: Money and Power are foremost, and he worships at the altar of Notoriety. He fights to consume the news and media on a daily basis.
Is this government the one you want? If not, vote it out. The midterms are on the horizon. Your vote is the answer.

In support of LGBTQ+ troops
Thank you James Powers for your guest editorial on Sunday, June 22, for supporting our LGBTQ+ troops and the community in general. I am not sure why we have to persecute those who are different just to make ourselves feel superior. We are ALL members of the human family and should be able to express our true selves without fear and still be treated with respect.

Where are our priorities?
I thought the juxtaposition of the articles on the front page of Friday’s Beacon Journal (June 20) was VERY telling. At the top of the fold was an article on the proposed cuts to victim assistance agencies, while the article below that deals with Ohio’s unclaimed funds being used by just one county AND to build a football stadium for a team that can’t seem to win games. Granted, these funds have been spent in the past, but in public kinds of projects that benefited all of Ohio citizens and not just a few. It seems like another example of “robbing” the poor to give to the rich. Wake up people! Where are our priorities?

Concerns with government actions
Minute on the harms caused by the actions of our current governments:
Kent Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) wishes to express our concern with the recent actions of our current governments. As Quakers, we value simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, justice and stewardship. We are called to search for the truth and to recognize “that of God,” a divine light that is inherent in every person. We believe the policies of the current governments are in stark conflict with the values and holy guidance we believe we are called to follow. We believe that recent actions of our government, both federal and state, violate laws, agreements, alliances and relationships in a manner that undermines the fabric of our democratic society.
Recognizing the seriousness of these issues and the need for immediate and sustained action to address them, we encourage everyone who shares our belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every person, and shares our concern for justice, truth, and our rights, to join us in making your voice heard. It would serve us well to be reminded that in the face of injustice and that which is wrong, our silence is complicity. We implore you to join us in making your voices heard in all forms of nonviolent action, including public protest, letter writing, phone calls or emails to public officials and lobbying our representatives.

Return to NATO
Ever since the end of WWII, America has stood with NATO and Europe’s democracies against the threat of Russian aggression. President Donald Trump’s embrace of Russia and abandonment of NATO and Europe is a betrayal of all we’ve stood for and of what’s kept us free and secure.
We don’t have to accept this. America is not with Trump’s embrace of Putin. It’s not too late to repudiate his betrayal of Ukraine. But we need to let our members of Congress know it.
Please tell your senators and representatives that you’re outraged by Trump’s traitorous selling out of Zelensky, abandonment of Europe and siding with Putin. They must not accept the appeasement of a tyrant who is clearly an enemy of America and the West, and certainly not an ally. And they must demand that we rejoin our European and NATO allies in support of Ukraine and democracy here and everywhere.
