Richland County, along with the rest of the United States, is celebrating 250 years of independence this summer.
In addition to the parades, barbecues and fireworks displays that highlight every Fourth of July weekend, residents throughout North Central Ohio plan to make a few extra memories in 2026.
Here are some of the top events planned for the Mansfield area this Independence Day.
What fireworks will be in Richland County?
The Mansfield area’s first fireworks show of 2026, “Light Up the Valley,” will begin at dusk June 28 at 119 Hines Ave. in Bellville.
The annual Independence Day fireworks show in Mansfield will begin about 10 p.m. July 4 in South Park, 100 Brinkerhoff Ave.
Mansfield Speedway has announced its “America250 Fireworks Spectacular” scheduled to begin 9 p.m. July 4 at the race track, 400 Crall Road East.
A fireworks display at Charles Mill Lake Park, 1277 Ohio 430 in Mansfield, will begin sundown July 5.
Shelby Bicycle Days fireworks are scheduled for launch at sundown July 11, with the best viewing downtown in the lawn around the Black Fork Commons Amphitheater.
What Fourth of July events are in the Mansfield area?
Children are invited to partake in the “America 250 Scavenger Hunt” from June 29 to July 2 at Mansfield Richland County Public Library, 43 W. 3rd St. in Mansfield. The library will host other events for young readers all summer.
Kingwood Center Gardens, 50 N. Trimble Road in Mansfield, will remain open until 9 p.m. July 2. Kingwood Hall will close at 8 p.m. and the gift shop will close at 8:30 p.m.
Downtown Mansfield will host its “First Friday Shop Hop” with more than 50 businesses and restaurants offering specials 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 3.
Mansfield will unveil its restored Vasbinder Fountain, which was dedicated July 4, 1881, with a dedication ceremony 11 a.m. July 4 at Central Park. Free ice cream and a live jazz concert will follow.
The public is invited to the Mansfield City Municipal Building at 1 p.m. July 4 for the opening of Mansfield’s Bicentennial Time Capsule, which includes messages from the past. A new capsule, intended to be opened in 2076 during the nation’s 300th birthday, will be sealed that afternoon.
What is America 250? When was the United States founded?
The United States of America will celebrate its semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, on July 4, 2026.
America’s independence was solidified on Sept. 3, 1783, when Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, ending the the American Revolution and officially recognizing the United States as a free and sovereign nation.
Only 29 years later, America’s freedom was tested anew during the War of 1812, which ended Feb. 17, 1815, when the United Kingdom again admitted its defeat and signed the Treaty of Ghent.
