Following a $3 billion loss last year, Walgreens announced plans to close 1,200 stores nationwide, including 500 this year.

The Hill reports that 54 stores across 17 states are slated to close in the coming weeks as part of Walgreens’ turnaround plan, and some of those are in Ohio.

Sycamore Partners takes Walgreens private in $10 billion deal

In addition, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Walgreens’ parent company, went private in March 2025 in a $10 billion deal with Sycamore Partners, Reuters reported (via USA TODAY).

Walgreens’ market value had shrunk to just over $9 billion from almost $100 billion a decade ago as margins on drug prices fell and consumers shifted to cheaper rivals.

Sycamore Partners is a private equity firm that specializes in retail and consumer investments. The company has a track record of acquiring distressed retailers for profit, including Staples, Talbots and Nine West. Sycamore typically sells a brand’s most valuable assets and reducing costs and reduces costs by closing stores, among other measures. However, savings are often used for investor dividends and not necessarily aimed at growth.

Walgreens posts $3 billion loss

In its earnings report for Fiscal Year 2024, which ended Aug. 31, Walgreens reported a $3 billion loss in the fourth quarter.

Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens’ parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, described the company as battling a “difficult operating environment,” The Columbus Dispatch reported in June 2024.

Of the roughly 8,600 locations in the United States, the pharmaceutical chain manages about 130 Walgreens stores in Ohio.

Walgreens joins Rite Aid, CVS in closing stores

The drugstore chain joins stores like Rite-Aid, which filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and closed stores across Ohio.

Other competitors, like CVS, have also felt the pinch of declining profits, and even with nearly 400 CVS locations across Ohio, the retailer has closed at least 900 stores over the past few years, according to CNN.
