USA TODAY used College Football 27 to predict CFP national champion

It’s not quite college football season yet, but fans of the sport now have something to bridge the gap, now that EA Sports has brought back its college football franchise. That’s right, “College Football 27” is now out for the masses, and as media types like to do, some cranked up the Xbox and simulated this coming season in college football.

One of those media types was our mothership, USA TODAY. Jordan Mendoza simulated 100 seasons in the wildly popular game, and of the 100 seasons, Ohio State led the way by winning the College Football Playoff national championship 22 times, the most of any program and the only team to win more than 20 times. In addition to that, the Buckeyes also led the way by making the CFP a whopping 85 times and the title game, and even more impressive, 57 times, more than 50% of the simulations.

Now, before you get too excited, last season’s simulation had Penn State as the overwhelming winner, and all that resulted in was James Franklin now coaching at Virginia Tech because of how poor things went in Happy Valley.

Here’s how the rest of the College Football 27 simulations went:

Five Big Ten teams took the title home, including, quite surprisingly, Nebraska once. Note there is no Michigan there, and I think that means EA Sports is doing the Lord’s work here. Six SEC teams raised the trophy, compared with five in the ACC and three from the Big 12. Boise State won it once for the Pac-12, and Notre Dame was the only independent to make a run to glory.

Don’t take this to the bank, but it’s at least interesting and food for thought, and that’s what we’re here for.
