Tyson Spicer, Dominic Bates star at Jimmy Wood, weekend top performers

Spicer, the state’s third-ranked wrestler in Division II at 144 pounds by Borofan, was named Most Valuable Wrestler as host New Lexington was second of 25 teams at the annual Jimmy Wood Invitational on Jan. 24.

Spicer had four dominant wins, including a 13-4 major decision of Barnesville’s Colt Carpenter in the finals, when the match was stopped three times due to blood. Carpenter is ranked fifth in Division III.

Spicer was among five champions for the Panthers, who were without two key starters in Hunter Hinkle and James Sharp. Brody McNabb (103), Ashton Thurman (113), Danny Waite (138) and Harrison Ratliff (150) also won titles, while Gunner Patton (126) and Chase Shriner (215) were fourth.

John Glenn took seventh behind eye-opening finals wins from Owen Edwards (157) and Dominic Bates (165) and a runner-up finish from Kian Barton.

A senior, Edwards posted his third consecutive unbeaten tournament with a 9-7 win against Lancaster’s Andrew Kraft, ranked fifth in Division I, and classmate Dominic Bates, whose title at 175 included a 5-2 win against Barnesville’s Hines Ford. Ford, a first-team All-Ohioan in football, is ranked second in Division III.

Barton took a 2-1 loss to Barnesville’s Christien Hannahs at 215 in a match that saw Barton’s late charge in the third period fall short as the Muskie contingent clamored for stalling.

Maysville’s Carter Abella, ranked fourth at 126 in Division II, outlasted fifth-ranked Anthony Bergeron, of Granville, in the finals as the Panthers were eighth. Ziggy Sandobal (120) and Jayce Daniels (144) took semifinal losses but rebounded to take third; Jerik Winland was fourth at 175.

Morgan’s Devin Waggy was second at 285, falling by pin to Nelsonville-York’s Will Odenthal, ranked ninth in Division III. Teammate Tanner Bankes was forced to default after reaching the semifinals at 175.

West Muskingum’s Cooper McKenzie was fifth (190) and River View’s Cameron Mobley (150) and Blaze Klein (165) sixth.

Laymon leads Sheridan: Sophomore Maddox Laymon was runner-up against a 61-team field to pace the Generals at the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay.

Laymon, defending Division II state champion at 120 pounds, picked up a 6-5 decision against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy’s Rocco Czarnecki, ranked sixth in in Division II, in the semifinals.

He fell in the finals, 4-2, to Perrysburg’s Alex Denkins in the finals. Denkins is ranked second in Division I.

Another title for McClellan: Tri-Valley senior Logan McClellan won the title at 215 pounds to lead Tri-Valley to an eighth-place finish among 35 teams in Josh Hephner Memorial at Austintown Fitch.

McClellan earned the crown with a 10-0 major decision of Alliance Malington’s Roman Albert in the finals — Albert is ranked eighth in Division II. He defeated Fitch’s Xavior Mayo, 7-0, in the semis.

Nathan Schultz (113) and Landon Jenkins (144) were fourth for the Scotties.

Larrison wins at Heath: Coshocton’s Ethan Larrison earned the title at 215 pounds and Jakob Arnold and Severeign Workman were third at the Robin Drumm Classic at Heath High School.

Roberto Paredes (165) and Carson Ridenbaugh (285) were fourth as Coshocton was sixth of 11 teams.

Swartz tops at West Holmes: Philo’s Gibson Swartz was champion at 190 pounds to pace the Electrics at the Todd Day Memorial.

Swartz reached the finals with three pins and picked up a 14-1 major decision finals win against West Holmes’ Camden McCluggage.

Philo was 12th of 15 teams with 74 1/2 points.

Girls Basketball

Philo 40, West Muskingum 34: Reagan Miller scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the second half, as the Electrics staved off the visiting Tornadoes in a key Muskingum Valley League crossover at The Power Plant.

Miller, a sophomore, hit a pair of 3s and also was 8-of-12 at the line. Additionally, Emily Stockdale had a pair of fourth-quarter baskets as Philo, which led 13-12 at the half, preserved a 28-24 lead after three quarters.

Debra Allen had three of West’s five second-half 3-pointers to support Teriauna Brandford’s 11 points. No other Tornado had more than six.

West suffered its first loss in league play but still leads the Small School Division. Philo stayed tied with Sheridan for the Big School Division lead with games against the Generals and Tri-Valley set for this week, weather pending.

Zanesville 65, Watkins Memorial 27: Achaia Walker scored a season-high 22 points with a 6-of-9 showing on 3s in a drubbing of the Warriors in the Licking County League’s Buckeye Division.

Ayawna Gladden was 7-of-9 from the line among her 19 points, Lakeyah Butcher chipped in 12 points and Isabella Norman seven.

Sheridan 61, Meadowbrook 22: Sidney Shonk scored 15 of her 19 points in the first half as the host Generals stayed tied atop the MVL-Big.

Nora Cooperrider added 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting on 3s as Sheridan led 33-12 at the half. Megan Turnes added five rebounds, Ivy Daly added four assists and Mylie Forgrave three.

Tri-Valley 61, Crooksville 33: Maddie Garber’s 17 points led four players in double figures for the host Scotties, who hit eight 3s in an MVL crossover in Dresden.

Claire Murrey and Reagan Lamonica added 14 points and Emma Smith 13 for Tri-Valley, which led 50-22 after three quarters.

Lexi Van Meter had 14 points and Mylee Davis seven for Crooksville.

New Lexington 52, John Glenn 37: Chloe Dick fired in a game-high 23 points, including a 7-of-8 effort at the line, for the Panthers in an MVL crossover win at home.

New Lex led just 34-30 entering the fourth but hit 14 of 15 free throws in the final frame to pull away. Gracie Newlon added eight points.

Sophomores Brynli Cavezza and Maddie Wiley, both sophomores, had nine points to lead John Glenn.

Maysville 49, River View 41: Three players reached double figures for the Panthers in an MVL crossover win in Newton Township.

Liliah Jones paced Maysville. which led 37-31 entering the fourth, with 14 points; Evee Mathews added 13 and Sophie Dennis 12.

Elaina Brenly’s 17 points paced RV.

Amanda-Clearcreek 58, Morgan 44: The Aces had a 14-3 run in the second half to overcome a 35-33 deficit late in the third quarter in a nonleague win in McConnelsville.

Myleigh Williams scored a game-high 16 points to lead Morgan, which hit 15 of 46 floor attempts. Myka Augenstein added eight counters and Gianna Myers seven.

Boys Basketball

Maysville 71, Tri-Valley 52: Gator Nichols tied his career high with 42 points — 22 in the second half — as the Panthers overcame foul trouble and a determined group of Scotties to pull away in the fourth quarter for an MVL crossover win in Dresden.

Tri-Valley (9-7, 7-4 MVL-Big) was still within 47-46 late in the third quarter after Ryan Lamonica scored inside, but Nichols’ fadeaway jumper just before the horn triggered an 8-2 Panther run that pushed Maysville’s lead to 57-48 with 5:30 left. The Scotties never got closer than six the rest of the game.

Maysville (13-1, 11-0 MVL-Small), which defeated the Scotties by 44 points in the first meeting, trailed by as many as seven in the second quarter and was challenged throughout as post players Kane Roehrig and Kade Rock each sat with four fouls for much of the second half.

Nichols responded with his best scoring night of the year, hitting a number of difficult shots in scoring 22 of the team’s first 30 points. He finished 8-of-11 at the line and hit four 3-pointers.

Landen Iden scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and Gavin Ferguson added eight points for Maysville.

Colten Rollison tallied 19 points, Ryan Lamonica 15, Oliver Baker 11 and Troy Patterson 10 for Tri-Valley.

Steub. Cath. Cent. 55, Rosecrans 53: Rahim Mitchell scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, as the host Crusaders outlasted the visiting Bishops in a rematch of last year’s Division VII East District final.

Rosecrans had a pair of shots to tie or take the lead in the final seven seconds but couldn’t convert.

Brody Boothe returned from a wrist injury to score 13 points in a balanced effort for the Bishops that also saw Kohen Harris net 14, Tyler Bernett 13 and Owen Lambert 11.

Harris had four of the team’s seven 3s, but the Bishops were just 20-of-55 from the floor overall — 13-of-33 on 2s. Catholic Central also had a 35-29 rebounding edge.

Rosecrans’ home game with Fisher Catholic on Jan. 24 was postponed due to anticipated snow from Winter Storm Fern. No makeup date has been announced.

West M 65, Morgan 39: Kyle Porter led nine players who scored with 21 points in an MVL crossover win for the Tornadoes (11-4, 6-3 MVL-Small) in McConnelsville.

Seven of Porter’s points came in a 22-6 blitz in the third quarter that turned a 26-18 West lead at the half into a 48-24 bulge entering the fourth. Noah Morrison added 15 points — eight with two 3s in the third — and Cade Porter eight for West.

Carsen Huck scored 11 of his 15 points in the first three quarters for Morgan (4-10, 2-7 MVL-Big).

John Glenn 74, Crooksville 33: Stehl Bates scored 19 of his 21 points and Brayden Davis 14 of his 16 in the first half for the Muskies (13-1, 9-1 MVL-Big) in an MVL crossover win in McLuney.

Cooper Briggs hit four first-half 3s in a 15-point effort for John Glenn, which led 22-9 after the first quarter and 55-15 at the half.

Hodge Taylor had 16 points for Crooksville (2-14, 1-9 MVL-Small).

River View 41, New Lexington 38: Paul Stenson had 13 points and Eli Stephens 11 with eight rebounds for the Panthers (2-12, 0-10 MVL-Small), who had 19 turnovers in an MVL road loss at Luther Stover Gymnasium.

Lane Ratliff added five assists and Tanner Toth six rebounds for New Lex.

River View improved to 3-11 overall and 3-7 in the MVL-Big.

Ridgewood 58, Sandy Valley 48: The Generals held a 22-8 edge in made free throws in an Inter-Valley Conference-South Division win in West Lafayette.

Jackson Cabot hit two 3s in the first quarter and was 11-of-14 at the line to pace the Generals (9-6, 5-5 IVC-South), who also had Andrew Kinsey and Logan Ridenbaugh with 12 points and Jace McQueen with nine.

Ridgewood led 41-38 entering the fourth but hit 11 of 16 at the line in the final frame to pull away — Cabot was 7-of-9.

Sandy Valley slipped to 3-13 overall and 1-7 in the IVC.

Sheridan 56, Coshocton 41: Canyon Daly scored a game-high 14 points to lead three players in double figures for the Generals (10-5, 9-1), who stayed tied with John Glenn for the MVL-Big School Division lead.

Colin Mallernee added 13 points, Tyce Whiteman 10 with seven rebounds and Logan Russell eight points as Sheridan outscored the visitors, 40-19, in the second half.

Coshocton slipped to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in the MVL-Small.

Watkins Memorial 69, Zanesville 52: Eli Jessup fired in 12 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter for the Warriors (7-7) in a Licking County League-Buckeye Division game at Winland Memorial Gymnasium.

Donevan Sheppard added 12 points as Watkins (5-4 LCL-Buckeye) outscored the Blue Devils (8-6, 5-4), 25-16, in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Philo 57, Meadowbrook 43: Rusty Trout paced the Electrics with 17 points and Carter Crabtree added 15, as they improved to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the MVL-Big with a crossover win at The Power Plant.

Junior Michael Ray finished with 10 points to lead the Colts (5-9, 5-4 MVL).

Jan. 22 results

Girls Basketball

Vincent Warren 40, John Glenn 35: Delaney Gates led a balanced Warrior attack with 10 points and Juliand Huffman and Donica Gates added eight in a nonleague win at home.

Ava Winland scored eight of her 13 points in the third quarter for John Glenn, which led 30-27 but managed just five points in the fourth.
