Top performers list ushers in championship season in Richland County

Championship season is upon us.

High school girls basketball crowned sectional champions while swimming just completed the district tournament, wrestling handed out conference titles and bowling is in the middle of sectional and district tournaments.

And Richland County athletes and teams brought home the gold last week. Let’s find out how they did with this week’s top performers list.

Monday, Feb. 16

-Mansfield Christian’s Josiah Schleusener led the Flames with 23 points during a 52-41 overtime Mid-Buckeye Conference boys basketball win over St. Peter’s.

Tuesday, Feb. 17

-Plymouth’s Jarrett Burrer led the Big Red with 19 points while Cainan Kilgore added 17, Keegan Beverly had 12 and Izaya Reynolds scored 10 in a 73-61 nonconference boys basketball win over Crestline.

-St. Peter’s Nasaan Wiggins led the Spartans with 27 points while Markeis Johnson added 19 during a 71-51 nonconference boys basketball win over Mapleton.

-Lexington’s John Taylor led Lexington with a 185-170-243—598 while Ethan Holbrook added a 211-167-153—531, Dylan Smith had a 158-213-146—517, Rory Glass had a 208-127-150—485 and Grady Heichel added a 155-128-145—428 as the Minutemen took third as a team at the Division I sectional bowling tournament. The team rolled a 3,661 nabbing a team district qualifying spot in the process. The Minutemen will move on to compete in the Division I District Boys Bowling at Port Clinton on Feb. 26.

-Mansfield Senior’s Nicholas Shaffer finished sixth in the Division I district diving competition. He posted a 148.65 in the preliminaries before improving to a 232.65 in the semifinals and a 313.50 in the finals to post the sixth-best score in the 15-competitor field.

Wednesday, Feb. 18

-Crestview’s Daniel Wells led the Cougars with 26 points while Karter Goon added 25 and Kaden Kissel had 11 during a 72-65 double-overtime win over Madison.

-Lexington’s Quinnten Anderson took ninth overall after posting a 135.10 in the preliminaries, a 214.65 in the semifinals and a 277.50 in the finals of the Division II district diving competition. Adam Britton took 10th overall after scoring 125.95 in the prelims, 196.75 in the semis and 277.20 in the finals and Ezra Mueller took 11th overall with a 124.85 in the prelims, a 199.25 in the semis and a 274.10 in the finals.

Thursday, Feb. 19

-Two Richland County bowlers punched their tickets to the district tournament on Thursday afternoon. Lexington’s Hailey Hildebrand rolled a 141-148-202–491 to post the fourth-best score of the entire Division I sectional bowling tournament at Fremont’s Plaza Lanes. She will be joined by Shelby’s Chloe Ernsberger who rolled a 135-165-134–434 for the eighth-best score of the tournament. They were among the Top 4 scores not already on a qualifying team and will compete at next week’s district tournament.

Friday, Feb. 20

-Clear Fork freshman Millie Chamberlain led all scorers with 20 points in her very first tournament game while Jada Brokaw added 10 during a 60-31 Division V sectional championship win over Galion.

-Madison’s Justin McCraney led the Rams with 17 points during a 48-45 Ohio Cardinal Conference boys basketball win over Lexington.

-Ontario’s Cardae Brown led the Warriors with 34 points while Kolbe Ramion added 24 during a 70-60 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball win over Highland.

-Crestview’s Karter Goon led the Cougars with 27 points while Daniel Wells added 23 during a 67-57 Firelands Conference boys basketball win over St. Paul.

-Ontario’s Mirielle Trumpower won the Division II district championship in the 100-yard butterfly with a new meet record time of 54.96 and the 100-yard backstroke with a 56.19 and was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:48.66 and the 400-yard freestyle relay team that clocked a 3:40.11.

-Ontario’s Joie Simmering was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:48.66 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that clocked a 1:41.08.

-Ontario’s Sasha Bulakovski was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:48.66 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that clocked a 1:41.08.

-Ontario’s Tessa Crum was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:48.66 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that clocked a 1:41.08.

-Ontario’s Ava Zehe was part of the district championship 200-yard freestyle relay team that clocked a 1:41.08 and the 400-yard freestyle relay team that clocked a 3:40.11.

-Ontario’s Zoey Shaffer was part of the district championship 400-yard freestyle relay team that posted a 3:40.11.

-Ontario’s Lily Secrist was part of the district championship 400-yard freestyle relay team that posted a 3:40.11.

-Ontario’s Colten Montgomery won the Division II district championship in the 100-yard backstroke with a 51.18 and was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:34.48 setting a new district meet record and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that posted a new district meet record time of 1:26.21.

-Ontario’s Carson Smith was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:34.48 setting a new district meet record and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that posted a new district meet record time of 1:26.21.

-Ontario’s Grantham Trumpower won the Division II district championship in the 50-yard freestyle with a 20.61, the 100-yard freestyle with a 45.79 was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:34.48 setting a new district meet record and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that posted a new district meet record time of 1:26.21.

-Ontario’s Owen Walter was part of the district championship 200-yard medley relay team that posted a 1:34.48 setting a new district meet record and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that posted a new district meet record time of 1:26.21.

-Lexington’s Kayla Caldwell won the Division II district championship in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.30 and the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:20.02.

Saturday, Feb. 21

-Mansfield Christian’s Landin Cyphers led the Flames with 16 points while Josiah Schleusener added 12 during a 52-31 nonconference boys basketball win over Bucyrus.

-Lexington’s Dantrell Hughes led all scorers with 29 points while Ethan Bianchi added 20 during a 70-61 nonconference boys basketball win over Licking Valley.

-Shelby’s Brayden DeVito led the Whippets with 29 points while Landon Foltz had 18 during a 59-48 Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball victory over Pleasant.

-Plymouth’s Ben Trimmer won the 144-pound Firelands Conference wrestling championship by going 2-0 on the day including a 4-3 win in the finals.

-Crestview’s Jack Stephens won the 175-pound Firelands Conference wrestling championship thanks to an 11-2 major decision in the finals.

-Crestview’s Bronson Rose won the 215-pound Firelands Conference wrestling championship by going 2-0 on the day including a 6-1 decision in the finals.

-Shelby’s Sebastian Cain won the 106-pound Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship by going 3-0 on the day including a 10-6 decision in the finals.

-Ontario’s Aiden Ohl won the 120-pound Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship by going 3-0 on the day including a 2-1 decision in the finals to go with two pins.

-Clear Fork’s Anthony Oscar won the 144-pound Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship by going 3-0 on the day including an 8-3 victory in the finals before two 15-0 tech fall wins.

-Ontario’s Julian McGinty won the 150-pound Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship by going 2-0 on the day including a 12-0 major decision in the finals.

-Ontario’s Gavin Miller won the 157-pound Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship by going 3-0 on the day including an 8-6 win in the finals before he piled up two pins in his previous two matches.

-Clear Fork’s Alex Schlosser won the 190-pound Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship by going 3-0 on the day including an 8-2 win in the finals after recording two pins in his previous two matches.

-Madison’s Aiden Proctor won the 165-pound Ohio Cardinal Conference championship by going 5-0 on the day with five pins, four of which came under a minute into his matches.

-Madison’s Jaxin Stancombe won the 285-pound Ohio Cardinal Conference championship by going 4-0 on the day with three pins and a 9-1 major decision in the finals.

Sunday, Feb. 22

-Crestview’s Naomi Gearheart won the 145-pound championship at the Norwalk Girls High School Wrestling Invitational by going 3-0 on the day with three pins all under 24 seconds into her matches. She earned her 100th career win during the tournament and is now 101-13 with 87 pins in her career. She is 36-3 during her junior season.
