Demolition crews uncovered a time capsule from nearly 100 years ago when moving the cornerstone from the original Gahanna Lincoln High School, which was recently torn down.
The building, which opened in 1928, was demolished this summer to make way for additional parking, The Dispatch previously reported. A new high school building opened to students in January.
The lead capsule from 1927 included documents and newspaper clippings from the time that the school was built, according to a post from Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools.
“Discoveries like this remind us that every generation leaves something behind for the next,” Superintendent Tracey Deagle said in a prepared press release. “As we celebrate the future of Gahanna Lincoln High School, we are equally committed to honoring the history that helped shape our schools and our community.”
The Gahanna Historical Society will handle the documents after Deagle initially reached out about how to handle and safeguard the findings for the public.
This is the first phase of a partnership with the local historical society, and other artifacts from the school’s history will become a part of the collection “over time.”
Displays in the future will show alumni, students and community members the history of the Gahanna Lincoln school through archived photos, trophies, documents and other items.
“Our community has a rich history, and we’re grateful for the expertise and partnership of the Gahanna Historical Society,” Deagle said in the release. “Through our shared efforts, we are preserving these pieces of history, allowing future generations to experience and value our collective heritage.”
According to the district, Gahanna Lincoln High School opened in 1928 after the city of Gahanna and neighboring Jefferson Township merged school districts.
The Gahanna Lincoln High School Alumni Association held a fundraiser by auctioning off 2,000 former bricks from the old school building earlier this summer.
