Through the first couple weeks of training camp, the San Francisco 49ers haven’t had their full compliment of edge rushers, as they’ve eased Nick Bosa and Keion White back into things, while Mykel Williams remains on the PUP list.
On Wednesday, the 49ers called in some reinforcements, signing veteran edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Okoronkwo played collegiately at Oklahoma from 2013-17, earnign All-Big 12 twice and All-American honors once. He was also named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year in hsi final season with the Sooners.
The Los Angeles Rams took Okoronkwo in the fifth round (No. 160 overall) of the 2018 NFL draft. He spent four seasons in Los Angeles, where he won a Super Bowl, before joining the Houston Texans for a year, the Cleveland Browns for two and the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
In 81 career games, the 31-year-old has recorded 132 tackles (31 for a loss), 38 quarterback hits, 17 sacks, four passes defensed, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Coming off of a torn triceps that limited him to just one game for the Eagles in 2025, Okoronkwo could fit in well as a great rotational piece with Bosa, Williams, White and others. It also helps that he’ll reunite with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who was his defensive coordinator in 2021 with the Rams.
