Brooklyn Nets center Mo Wagner recently signed with the Nets in free-agency after one month passed between the original reporting of his signing and when the team officially announced the signing. Brooklyn waited so long to make the signing official as they were trying to maximize its cap space prior to the move, but it seems that the updated details include some savings on the salary cap.
On Tuesday, Keith Smith of Spotrac reported on X that Wagner’s contract details came in lower than reported as his contract is not entirely worth the $19 million over two years that HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported earlier in July. Per Smith, Wagner’s deal is for two years and $18.45 million, but the rest of the contract structure appears to be the same, including the second year still being a mutual option.
With Wagner’s deal being worth a little over $500,000 less than what was initially reported, Brooklyn’s salary cap is now almost $5 million instead of being closer to $4.5 million. Granted, the Nets freeing up over $500,000 cap space with this new contract structure may not mean much in the grand scheme of things, but Brooklyn decides to be aggressive down the line, these savings could be huge if it helps them get a player they desire.
Wagner, 29, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 6.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 42.6% from the field and 31.4% from behind the three-point line in 36 games played. Wagner played less than half of this past season due to his recovery from a knee injury that he suffered in the middle of the 2024-25 campaign while with the Magic.
With Nic Claxton having been traded to the Chicago Bulls as part of the trade that brought Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle to Brooklyn, Wagner is now part of a center rotation that also includes Day’Ron Sharpe and potentially Danny Wolf. Wagner will likely be coming off the bench behind Sharpe, but even if that is the case, Nets fans now know that Wagner’s deal is cheaper than it was originally reported.
