SVC baseball history: Winning state title has been elusive for many

Thirty years ago, Paint Valley won the state baseball championship.

This year, Unioto is headed to the state semifinal game on June 13.

So, what is the history of the Scioto Valley Conference’s baseball teams in the state final four?

1970

Zane Trace fell to Cincinnati Lincoln Heights 4-3 in the opener of the Class A baseball tournament.

1983

Unioto lost 3-2 to St. John in the Class A state semifinal game at Ohio State’s Trautman Field.

1985

Piketon was ousted in the Class A state semifinal in a 4-1 loss to Fort Laramie.

1988

The Adena Warriors reached the Class A title game after a 5-2 victory over Fremont St. Joseph. They faced Newark Catholic in the championship game, where they fell 11-1.

1989

Adena again reached the Class A championship game. This time, they had a 7-6 win over Gibsonburg in the semifinal. But like the year before, Adena faced Newark Catholic and this time lost 6-4.

1994

Unioto lost in the state semifinal game 5-2 to Versailles at Thruman Munson Stadium.

1995

On June 5, 1995, Paint Valley clinched the school’s first-ever state championship in any sport by defeating Cincinnati Mariemont 9-7 to capture the Division III crown.

2001

Zane Trace dropped a 7-1 game to Marion Pleasant in the state semifinals at the Ohio State University’s Bill Davis Stadium.

2005

Adena again reached the state title game. Instead of class A, this was in Division III. They faced Archbold, who defeated the Warriors 7-1.
